People First of Tifton

People First of Tifton is a Self-Advocacy group that means “people with disabilities speaking for ourselves and working together to reach our dreams and our goals”.

The idea for People First came from a group home in Oregon in 1974 that housed 8 individuals.  They were tired of being labeled “disabled” and wanted to be known as “people first,” hence the name of the group.  There are People First groups all over the world today.  Our local chapter is located in Tifton, GA and is open to anyone with disabilities.

Our meetings are run by members who have been nominated by others to serve in the positions of:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Sergeant of Arms

We have 5 main goals. They are:

  1. Help each other to make our dreams come true.
  2. Learn and teach each other about our rights and responsibilities.
  3. Speak out about important issues
  4. Work to make changes in the system.
  5. Have fun and support each other.

People First is based on the principle of self determination/freedom to make choices and plan our own lives. We want authority to have control over money and resources. We choose the people to give us support when we want it. We want responsibility for our choices and actions and in being a vital part of our communities.

You can purchase a People First T-shirt featuring our *new* logo in either
blue or pink here; shirts are $10 each.
